Winter is coming

I opened my door this morning to a chilling breeze.

It is autumn in South Africa. It is supposed to cool down and get colder. That is one of the characteristics of autumn and winter.

I usually keep my door open for fresh air. Where I live, I don’t have windows to open. Only doors. This morning, when I felt the breeze, I closed my door again.

There was a chill in the breeze this morning. We have experienced winds blowing this year. This morning’s wind was the first cold wind this year.

Winter really is coming.

I live in the Rustenburg area in the North West province. Over the years we don’t often experience very cold weather. I can remember two or three winters over the past 20 years that were really cold. So much so, that people actually complained about how cold it was. And even then, the really cold times lasted about a week during the year.

I am not saying that we don’t really wear warmer clothes during the winter months. I am saying, however, that we don’t usually wear very thick warmer clothes, like people in places such as Potchesfstroom (Tlokwe) or Standerton (and many other places in Mpumalanga).

Something I can’t remember either, is long winters. Or cold autumn days.

This morning was cold. As I am writing here, almost 12:00 in the afternoon, I am still wearing a jacket.

My weather app is telling me that we will be experiencing minimum temperatures of 9 degrees Celsius at, and maximum temperatures at most 25 degrees in the day time over the next few days. That is cold. For Rustenburg.

Good luck to anyone who lives in colder areas. It seems, to me at least, that this is going to be a cold and long winter.
