World Book Night on 23 April 2021

I saw a Facebook post yesterday. Yesterday was “World Book Day”. Technically, it is true. But it is not the whole story.

I went to the “Days of the year” website. I saw that yesterday was actually “World Book Night”.

This is a day that grew out of “World Book Day”, which is celebrated in March. It is a day for encouraging children to read more books. World Book Night is a day (or night) to encourage adults to read more books.

It began in 2011, and was the idea of a medical doctor, Jamie Byng. Interesting to read is that, in 2012, the day moved from March to April, to coincide with UNESCO’s International Day of the Book. In 2012 and 2013, the day began to be celebrated in the United States as well.

The person who shared the post about “World Book Day” on his Facebook page, enjoys reading. If it wasn’t for him, I would not have known about this day. I haven’t asked his permission to share his name on my blog. I hope to remember this day, and ask him if I may share his name next year.

He challenged his “Facebook friends” with a question. Share one religious author and one non-religious author you enjoy reading, as well as one book by each of these authors.

This inspired me to write this blog. And think about another question. Or challenge. Or idea.

Make a list of about twenty books that I want to read in the next few months. I will be reading more Afrikaans books, since I am Afrikaans. I will try to translate the Afrikaans title to English. Some of these books I have read before, but want to read it again.
